Genesis 11:1–9 — The Tower of Babel shows how unity can be used for pride instead of praise. The people spoke one language and worked together to build a city and a tower “with its top in the heavens,” seeking to make a name for themselves and to avoid being scattered. God intervened, confusing their language and scattering them across the earth.
This passage challenges us to examine the orientation of our unity. Are our efforts driven by fear, pride, or the desire for control? Or are they motivated by trust in God’s calling to be a scattered, dependent people who reflect His glory? The confusion at Babel also points us forward to Pentecost, when God restores unity through the Spirit—not for self-exaltation, but to empower mission.
Application: Ask God to expose any pride in our plans and to realign our unity toward worship, humility, and gospel mission. Let our shared work build bridges for God’s glory, not monuments to ourselves.
